#GempakSpot: Old Lady Stumbles Upon Multi-Million Dollar Renaissance Masterpiece In Her Kitchen
One would only expect to find pots and pans and probably even leftover food in their kitchen.
However, for an old French lady, she found a piece of art worth millions of Ringgit in her kitchen in a town near Paris.
Here’s the twist: the lady didn’t know the worth of said art piece. In fact, she didn't even know it was a masterpiece.
According to a report by AFP, she thought it was just an old religious icon when she took it to her local auctioneers to be valued.
But it turns out that the art was actually an early Renaissance masterpiece by the Florentine master Cimabue called “Christ Mocked”, and estimated to be worth between €4 million and €6 million (RM18.4 million and RM27.5 million).
Apparently, the lady hung the art between her kitchen and her sitting room, directly above a hotplate for cooking food.
The art is thought to be part of a large diptych dating back to 1280, when Cimabue painted eight scenes depicting Christ’s passion and crucifixion. Two of the arts from the same series now hangs in the National Gallery in London and in New York respectively.
Surprisingly, the art in the National Gallery was also lost for centuries, and was only found when a British aristocrat was clearing his ancestral seat in Suffolk.
The art found by the old lady, meanwhile, will be auctioned at the Acteon auction house in Senlis on 27 October.
BRB, we're gonna raid our storeroom to see if there any valuable masterpieces lying around.
