15 Beautiful Deepavali Mall Decorations in M’sia to Admire This Festive Season

Each year, the Deepavali decorations in malls, or rather the lack thereof, are a frustrating issue that highlights the lack of representation of the culture of the Indian community in Malaysia, one of the top ethnic groups in the country. This year, the matter was made worse because Halloween and Deepavali fall on the same date: 31 October.

As reported by BFM News, many Malaysian netizens have highlighted that Halloween decorations have taken priority over Deepavali decorations in shopping malls, with the former being displayed more prominently than the latter. In addition, Halloween is culturally irrelevant to Malaysia.

However, some malls have still managed to impress with their colourful decorations, which typically include kolams (colourful designs created on the floor using coloured powders, rice, and more). While some barely made any effort, here are our best picks.

Suria KLCC

The mall didn’t just pull out all the stops when it came to décor; it also offered loads of exciting activities and rewards with ‘Experience the Colours of Deepavali’.

The Gardens Mall

Decorations at this ‘atas’ mall aren’t just extensive and lavishly and tastefully done.

The Exchange TRX

TRX doesn’t disappoint with a humongous peacock made of artificial flowers and decorations, eye-catching LED screens, and traditional cultural performances.

Pavilion Kuala Lumpur

Pavilion KL is a place people always visit for the decorations, and while it can’t be compared with what they do for Christmas, check out the incredible display at their entrance.

Pavilion Bukit Jalil

Soak in the gorgeous colours of the season and snap a photo as a keepsake.

Sunway Pyramid

The numerous Sunway malls are decorated for the Festival of Lights, and this one features the stunning Rajasthani umbrella.

IOI City Mall

From now until 3 November, there will be exciting activities for the whole family, including performances and Kids Workshops.

Setia City Mall, Setia Alam

Enjoy the beauty of their stunning Deepavali decorations this month, featuring glowing lanterns and festive touches all around the mall.

MidValley Megamall

MidValley always has fantastic and intricate kolams; this year is no different. This one is massive, too!

NU Sentral

Talk about a show-stopper. This décor by a single man, Sivabalan, has entered the Malaysia Book of Records for ‘The Highest Number of Colours in a Single Rangoli Kolam’ with 100 shades. It took 150kg of coloured rice to make!

Central-I City

We love their cute and creatively made elephant decorations, which add a special touch to the mall.

The Curve, Mutiara Damansara

The setup here is HUGE, taking up the whole central atrium. Check out the golden elephant, and don’t miss the performances and activities for the whole family.

1Utama

The décor here was also created by the one and only Sivabalan, but ensure you catch it before it is taken down on 3 November.

Gurney Plaza, Penang

The decorations at Penang’s most famous mall don’t disappoint either. We feel like they did a better job than Pavilion KL. Check out the giant peacock and humongous lanterns, which glow warm and festive.

Queensbay Mall, Penang

At this other mall in Penang, you can see sacred Hindu animals, cows, neon lights, and traditional dances.

Happy Deepavali to all our readers who are celebrating!
